“The Bajaus are the ‘gypsies’ of the Flores Sea, a fishing people. Their boats are their houses and when they become sedentary for a short time, their houses resemble boats.
On the island of Pulau Batu (the “rock island”), we met Tima: ‘Yes, I’m happy to be a woman,’ says Tima. ‘My two brothers take a canoe out to fish every day. If I’d been a boy I’d have done the same and there wouldn’t have been anyone to look after my mother!’".
